Loan Boxes

 

Loan boxes cost £5 for a two week loan and need to be collected from, and returned to, the museum.

Jack Phillips and the Titanic, KS 1 Loan Box

This box uses artefacts, memories, stories, reference books, drama and costume to explore the true stories of 4 people who travelled on the Titanic:

  • Chief Wireless Operator Jack Phillips, from Farncombe

  • Stewardess Lucy Snape, from Witley

  • 6-year old First Class passenger Douglas Spedden

  • First Class passenger Edith Rosenbaum

Jack Phillips and the Titanic, KS 2 Loan Box

This box will help students explore Jack Phillips' story and discover the local sites associated with him. It will bring in other local people connected with the Titanic, including Lord Pirrie of Witley Park. The box will introduce a range of primary and secondary sources of information about the disaster, as well as the debate over its cause.

Gertrude Jekyll, Arts and Crafts Box

In the later 19th century west Surrey was a hotbed of the Arts and Crafts Movement and home to an extraordinary collection of artists and craft workers. Find out about their lives and work and about Gertrude Jekyll's wide range of skills. This box comes with lots of practical ideas for art and craft in the classroom.

Prehistory Loan Box

How often do you get to handle artefacts which are many thousands of years old? This loan box includes orignal and reproducation Stone Age tools, a selection of children's reference books and activities based on the extraordinary discovery of Utzi the Iceman.  Detailed teaching notes tell the story of the local area from the Palaeolithic to the Iron Age.

Explore life in Roman times through a fascinating collection of original Roman artefacts, from pottery and jewellery, to bones and oyster shells from a Roman kitchen. Supporting books and detailed teaching notes.

Roman Buildings Loan Box

Build your own Roman roof and heating system - model tiles can be used to construct a typical Roman tiled roof and a hypocaust and are supported by original examples of Roman building materials and detailed teaching notes.

Use the illustrations, notes and examples of original mosaic pieces to find out about Roman mosaics and then use the trays and modern mosaic pieces to create your own designs.

Saxon Loan Box

This box explores the different types of evidence for Godalming's Saxon origins and looks at what it can tell us about life in the town in Saxon times.  It includes:

  • Original Saxon pottery found in Godalming

  • Information sheets about key Saxon objects associated with the town

  • Reproduction pottery, loom weights, and spindles

  • Saxon board games to play

  • Activities based on local Saxon place names and on the Saxon font in Godalming parish church

  • Books on riddles, runes, language and storytelling as well as everyday life in Saxon times

The Ancient Egyptians

Original pottery, jewellery, a coin and an ancient hand axe illustrate the early settlement of the Nile valley, Egypt's often violent relationship with neighbouring Kush and everyday life and ritual in Ptolomaic Egypt. Detailed teaching notes are provided.

The Toy Box

A collection of original and replica toys including a wooden bilbo catcher, bagatelle, counting frame, quoits board, metal vehicles, jigsaws, replica Roman knucklebones and a replica Tudor stump doll. Detailed teaching notes are provided.

World War II

Original artefacts and a recorded CD of personal memories vividly recall what it was like to grow up during a bleak but compelling six years. Items include an original ARP helmet, a civil defence arm band and medals, as well as illustrations of local experiences.

This box is regularly borrowed for reminiscence work as well as by schools
