Godalming High Street in 1854
The Library holds over 5000 photographs in sepia, black and white and colour, plus over 350 postcards. Some of these date back to the mid 19th century but many are more recent and record events in Godalming and the surrounding area. The photographs are of local people, places, events, buildings and industry. Many of the older ones were taken by local photographers Alan Chaplin Jones and Elsa Megson.
The collection includes photographs of:
Witley Park, showing the house, the interior and the outlying buildings at the time of the ownership of Lord and Lady Leigh in the 1920s
The Jubilee celebrations in Godalming of Victoria (60th) in 1897 and George V (25th) in 1935
Local industries and services, notably RFD 1915 – 1971, Pitchers, Hillyers Bakery, Godalming Fire Brigade and the Water Treatment Works
Plays performed by local dramatic groups such as Godalming Players and the Nomad Drama Group
