POW LOINCLOTH

Godalming Museum, ref: 988.4A

This prisoner of war loincloth was issued and worn by Gunner Robert William Baker, of Godalming, whilst imprisoned in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp for three years during the Second World War. The loincloth (called a 'Jap Happy', by the prisoners) is decorated with scenes from the camp and is signed by his fellow prisoners of English, Dutch, Australian and Chinese nationalities as well as by Japanese guards.
